Shipment of medical journals and textbooks to Burma.

The first shipment of JAMA, NEJM, Pediatrics and Family Practice journals was shipped in January, 2004 in collaboration with the Cetana Foundation. The next shipment is due at the end of this month which will include textbooks in Cardiology, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and HIV. The textbooks and journals are sent to Myanmar General Practitioner Society  at Theinbyu Road. Once this process is established, it will be expanded to Mandalay. Persons interested in donating recent journals and textbooks are  kindly requested to contact Dr. Oung Thain at othain@aol.com.

Networking with Myanmar General Practitioner Society to sponsor scholarships.

As we are well aware, the general practitioners back home are at a huge disadvantage when it comes to staying current with the literature for lack of resources. Myanmar General Practitioner Society was formed in 1987 with a current membership of 1700. Of the 17,000 registered medical doctors in the country, over 10,000 are GPs. As reported in our annual meeting in Baltimore in 2002, the BMA-NA can significantly upgrade the GPs continuing education and thereby improving the standard of care especially in the context of the current HIV/AIDS epidemic in the country. Not that we expect them to provide complicated anti-retroviral therapy but to give them the information, education and communication materials to help them deal with containing the epidemic. BMA-NA president-elect Dr. Chan Aung and secretary-elect Dr. Oung Thain have met with GP Society president Dr. Tin Aye on their recent trip to Burma and have tentatively agreed on sponsoring candidates to train in Thailand. Dr. Tin Aye and Mr.Young of Cetana Foundation will be involved in the selection process. This opportunity to network with Myanmar GP Society was proposed to me by the Organizing Secretary of GP Society Dr. Myint Oo whom I met in Rangoon in January 2002. It took us a while but we got it done.

Dr. Myint Oo is currently a Humphrey’s scholar studying public health policies at the University of North Carolina at Capel Hill. He can be reached at
